    1. We ___ in Taipei for ten years, from 1995 to 2005.
    (A) lived (B) had lived
    2. I missed the important part of the movie because I ___ during the film.
    (A) nodded off (B) had nodded off

    I was going to ask what you thought, but then changed my mind. These are bad questions. Although the person who wrote them almost certainly wants A for 1 and B for 2, both A and B are possible for each.

    1 You were nearly asleep, but not fully asleep-, like when people start falling asleep, then jerk themselves awake, then start falling asleep again. In 2, the person did sleep.
