When you drink all of the beer that is left

    Hi there

I just wanted to know if there is a word for when you drink of all of the beer left in a bottle/glass?

I have heard the word "chuck" used, is that the proper word? And is it British or American?

    I am not a teacher.

Polish that off, and I'll get you another one.

I have never heard chuck used in that sense.

Ok what would you say then? Polish, sounds kind of not like the word IMHO...

You can drain it to remove what's left.
If you drink all (or a lot of it) at one go, you've chugged it.
I'm not a teacher, but I write for a living. Please don't ask me about 2nd conditionals, but I'm a safe bet for what reads well in (American) English.

What word? "Polish" like "rub", not "Polish" like Lech Walesa, right?

Nobody I know says "chuck" for that. You might say, "chuck it back", "chuck one back", "chuck back a few cold ones", you get the idea, meaning something like "throw the beer to the back of your throat where it is swallowed" or, in short, drink it. That does not specifically apply to finishing the beer, though you might hear, "Chuck that one back, and I'll get you another." I think that the expression might be mostly Australian.

As a preamble to downing the beer that is left, and as an encouragement to your companions to do likewise, you can announce "Down the hatch" or "Bottoms up". At least, you can if you are an old fogey like me.

It occurs to me that maybe what you heard wasn't chuck but chug. In AmE to chug a beer is to drink it all in one go, as BarbD said above.

I just wanted to know if there is a word for when you drink of all of the beer left in a bottle/glass?

In earlier times if we drank a full glass/bottle/jug in one go it was a "chug-a-lug". I agree with coolfoot on most of the other terms. If you want someone to finish up what's left in their glass then "polish it off" was and still is very common in my experience.
