    as far back as

    Extinction has playd a role in the evolution of life on our planet for as far back as we can look through the fossil record, and that is at least 600 million years.

    i dont understand why is there "as far back as we can look through the fossil record" mean here.

    It just emphasises that this process goes right through the fossil records we have.
