    Diplomacy,

    (1) May I discuss your first sentence?

Tom: May I have my book, please.

Martha: Oh, sorry. I haven't got/ don't have your book

    with me now. [It's 7 a.m.]

Tom: What!!! Why not? You told me yesterday that you would

    bring it to me today.

Martha: I know. But I had to leave it at home. [At 7 a.m.]

    Tom: Why?

Martha: When I picked it up [at 7 a.m.], I realized that it was too

heavy for me to carry on the bus, so I left it at home.

    Tom: OK. I understand.
