Does the Past Perfect sound good

    Hi, there.
I've constructed a sentence of my own and I'd like to request you dear teachers to comment on that.
"When I was in Johannesburg on a business trip I had had a hard time understanding native speakers".

Here are some of another questions:

    1. Is the Past Perfect fit for this situation?
    2. Could you please bring my attention to the mistakes in the post.
You may just highlight it, nothing more.

    Thank you for your participation.

    well, more on this:
I sounds more perfect if you say,
" When i was in johannesbesburg on a business trip, i had a hard time understanding native speakers".

*Try using commas and others to seperate long sentences too. courage.

Thank you for your input. Please try to remember to use capital letters where appropriate. I wouldn't use the comma but that's a matter of personal choice.

    *Not a teacher

I would also choose the Simple Past.

When I was in Johannesburg on a business trip I had a hard time understanding native speakers.

    or Past Perfect:

When I had been in Johannesburg on a business trip I had had a hard time understanding native speakers.

Why? When shows us that the actions were taking place at the same time. Because while you were in Johannesburg you had a hard time understanding native speakers. Using Past Perfect would show that you had a hard time understanding native speakers before you were in Johannesburg. You could use the Past Perfect, but use it in both sentences.
