*Not a teacher

But = Used to introduce something contrasting with what has already been mentioned.
BTW = by the way = Introducing a different topic.

***** NOT A TEACHER *****

Tom: Would you like some ice cream that I just bought?

Martha: No, thanks. I do love ice cream, but I don't eat it

anymore. It's too fattening. By the way, I hope you are

not offended, but I notice that you have recently been getting

a little fatter. Too much ice cream???

Note that 'BTW' is a popular abbreviation, chiefly use in online forums, emails, text messages and the like. But, in common with several other abbreviations, it's starting to be used even in speech (although 'by the way' is much shorter). Others include 'OMG', 'LOL' and 'FYI'. I've even heard 'FYI' used as a noun: 'A bit of FYI - ... <information>'

I truly, truly cringe when anyone over the age of 15 says "oh em gee!"

The other day my daughter said something like "And I was lolling..." and she meant that she was laughing. I cringed again.

I'm getting old.

Aren't we all?

The sad thing about this is that I find myself thinking. "Why do they debase our beautiful language in this way?' Five minutes later, I am writing in this forum to remind some fuddy-duddy pedant that the language changes and that they should not insist on forms that may have been 'correct' when they were at school.

I have not only grown old, but also, apparently hypocritical.

Age brings wisdom and the ability to see all sides of a question. (or perhaps it's just crankiness and inconsistency);-)

I like to think that in my case it's the words in blue that are appropriate. Most people who know me insist that it's the words in red. They are entitled to their opinions of course (which proves the aptness of the words in blue), no matter how moronic those opinions might be (which ...)
