got talking /got to talking

What would be the difference between these two phrases?

"I have not seen Joe in a while. So when I met him in a bar I got to talking to him and we ended up drinking and talking all night at my place."

They mean the same thing. They both mean "started talking to/with him".

"Got to talking to him" sounds to me more like something someone from the South of the US would say.* This is colloquial.


*my idea of how they talk is formed solely by watching movies

Got to talking sounds strange to me- in BrE, I would expect got talking.

They mean the same thing. They both mean "started talking to/with him".

"Got to talking to him" sounds to me more like something someone from the South of the US would say.* This is colloquial. It's frequently heard in other parts of the US as well.
