Thumbs down WIPE OUT VS DISSAPEAR?

We can both use these words, but What is the difference? capital worlds are the ones I think are right

Entire turtle populations have been WIPED OUT/have disappeared in the last forty years.

    Thanks in advance!

Both are possible. 'Wiped out' suggests that there is an agent; 'disappeared' does not.
