    coming from with this

If I hear someone talking things a person usually doesn't say or is a bit nervous and I want to figure out why, can I say "I'm trying to understand where you're coming from with this?"?

I'm trying to understand where you're coming from with
means that I'm trying to understand your point of view (or why you're saying/doing what you're saying/doing)

I wouldn't say this to someone who's nervous. I'm not clear on "talking things a person usually doesn't say".

I'm trying to understand where you're coming from with this.

That is fine when 'this' refers to what the other speaker has just said.
