P1: I'm standing in the que at the enterance of the venue
P2: Really? what position in the que are you?
P1: umm theres alot of people in front of me

I think I would be more likely to say, "How near the front are you?" or, "Where are you in the queue?"

So would I but, "...what position in the queue are you?" is OK.
