Dear all,

Does the verb "do" in the following context mean "to sign on"?

[I USED TO DO HARRY REDKNAPP’S BOOTS AND TONY COTTEE’S AND THEN THEY GAVE ME SLATER’S BOOTS AS WELL SO I WAS DOING THREE PAIRS]

That was said by Rio Ferdinand to a TV host.

Thanks.

I would think that it means "to shine" or "to polish." Do you have any more context? Who is Rio Ferdinand?

He said after that:

[ROBBIE SLATER, TIGHTEST MAN AROUND! I THINK HE GAVE ME ABOUT A TENNER. EVERYONE ELSE WAS GETTING ABOUT ONE HUNDRED POUNDS AND STUFF, EIGHTY POUNDS, AND I GOT A TENNER OFF HIM. HARRY DIDN’T EVEN THINK ABOUT GIVING ME A POUND NOTE.]

He wasn't always a famous footballer.

As an apprentice he was happy to clean the boots of his heroes.

He is polishing shoes, then. Interesting!

I don't know what he does or did. But from the tone of the video and the commentary it sounds like an inside joke.

He's joking, but it's true- apprentices have to clean boots and things.
