Dear all,

What is the meaning of "general" in the following context:

[Having alienated his quarterbacks at two previous teams, he came out strongly in support of Tony Romo, his general in Dallas, who had been criticized for taking a holiday with girlfriend Jessica Simpson]

That was said about "Terrel Owens"

Thanks a lot.

In American football, the quarterback is the leader of the team (when it is on offense). This is sometimes referred to as being the "field general."

In other words, this is a military metaphor. Not so unusual in a game with bombs and blitzes.

Excuse me, so we can say that they are 2 quarterbacks and one of them is the leader of the team (by that the leader of the other quarterback in the team"?

Thanks,

No, maiabulela, the article refers specifically to only one 'general' (quarterback) and that is Tony Romo.

Terrell Owens, a wide receiver, is a controversial football player in the National Football League. He has played on several different teams and has always created bad feelings with the quarterback he was playing with. In your example, he alienated the quarterback on each of the teams he played on before he was traded to Dallas. When he arrived in Dallas he got along fairly well with Tony Romo. When Romo was criticized for dating Jessica Simpson, Owens came to Romo's defense.

Unfortunately, as with Owens' relationships with previous quarterbacks, Owens' relationship with QB Tony Romo was reported to fall apart during the 2008 season. Owens was frustrated with the lack of balls thrown his way and was jealous of the relationship Romo had with Pro Bowl Tight End Jason Witten. The controversy continued and Owens was traded to another team. ;-)
