    specialized tail

    Hi,

Sinewy graspers now emerged from the floor of the cell, positioning the frozen water bear in an active pose as if it had been caught midleap with its specialized tail.

    What does "specialized tail" mean?

    It makes no sense.

Can you tell us the context?

    Is this a translation?

If speaking of a biological organism, a specialized organ is an organ that evolved to have a special/particular function.

Specialized = designed for a particular purpose.

compare to Generalized = serving a general or wide purpose, not a specific one.

So, the tail of this animal has some special function. You'd need to read more, I guess, to find out what it is.
