    confused if Id heard right

    Dear gracious teachers,

I would be very thankful if you want to help me understanding the meaning of this phrase. Here is the context:

    Shut up, you abandoned orphan!
Silence. Steve's laughter vanished in a nanosecond. I sat up straight, confused if Id heard right.

What actually the author try to say? I'm a non-native, and this phrase makes me confused.

Thanks a lot for your help :)

He was confused because he wasn't sure if he had heard the words that he heard: did the person say "abandoned orphan!" (an insult) or did the person say something else, something that wasn't an insult?
