    Re: not happy

    1) Why are you not happy?
    2) Why do you not happy?

Use the verb BE (is, are, was, were, etc) with adjectives:

    You are happy.
    You were happy.
You are going to be happy.
    You do happy.

    Re: not happy

    thanks...that was really helpful

    what about
    where "are" you going?
    where "do" you going?
go is not an adjective..now how do we come to know that "do" is incorrect to use in this sentence.

    (1) You are not happy.

    (a) As you know, "are" is a form of "to be." "To be" is a very special

    verb.

    (i) To make the question, just move "are" to the front:

    Are you not happy?

Then you can add other words:

    WHY are you not happy?

    HOW are you not happy?

    WHEN are you not happy?

(P.S. In conversation, most people contract (connect) "are" and

"not": WHY aren't you happy? You cannot say: WHY are not you

happy? Native speakers do not like the sound.)

    (2) Speakers use "do" to make questions if the verb is NOT "to be."

    (a) In your second sentence, you could say:

Why do you not feel happy? (The verb is "feel.")

    (3) Here is another example:

    Mona is not fat.

    Is Mona not fat?

Why is Mona not fat? / Why isn't Mona fat? (Because she eats

    carefully and exercises every day.)

Why does Mona not become fat? (The verb is "become.") / Why

doesn't Mona become fat? (REMEMBER: Native speakers do not

like the sound of "Why does not Mona become fat?")

Here we have the present progressive form of the verb, made up of the auxiliary verb BE and the ing-form of the main verb. The auxiliary DO has no place in this.

You're most welcome. To sum up, the verb is 'are going'. It's BE + ing, not BE. With question formation, the subject (you) and the auxiliary verb (are) switch places which separates the auxiliary (are) from its participle (going). Here's another example:

    • They are going to school. statement
    • Are they going to school? question

    Re: not happy

i knew that......i just want to know the basics of uses of do/does/did and is/are/am.
when do we use "do" and when do we use "are" ?

1a)what "do" you want to do in your life?
1b)what "are" you want to do in your life?

1a) is correct and 1b) is incorrect..but in example given below 2a) is incorrect and 2b) is correct...in both 1a) and 2a) we use "do" but one is correct and another is incorrect...what is the reason?

    2a)what "do" your hobby?
    2b)what "are" your hobby?

    (1) As a learner like you, I understand how difficult it is to

understand certain things about another language.

    (2) Please remember the verb "to be" is SUPER special!!!

In fact, some languages do NOT use "to be."

    (a) We English speakers must say: She is nice.

In some languages, they just say "She nice."

Many times, "to be" in English is just an equals (=) mark.

Today is hot. / Today = hot.

    (3) Please remember that you use "do" for questions IF the verb

    is NOT "to be."

    (a) What is your hobby? What = your hobby? My hobby is music. My

    hobby = music.

    (b) What do you like for a hobby? The verb is "like." If you say "What

you like for a hobby?" native speakers will understand, but for "good"

English, you need to use the "question word" do.

    (4) Just keep asking questions. The teachers (and non-teachers)

are delighted to help you. Little by little you will understand.
