I went to the shop and saw the pack of ribbon with the name on the package "ribbon" which I understand.

But I saw another pack of product which is used for making ribbon which named "ribbon" as well.

During conversation or writing, how can we know what does it really mean by saying "ribbon"?

During conversation or writing, how can we know what does it really mean by saying "ribbon"? How do we know what any word with more than one meaning mean? Context. In most situations, ribbon means the narrow piece of some material/cloth. But when I just say "I have a ribbon" without any context, I could be talking about hair ribbons or typewriter ribbons. You won't know without further information.

This is what I normally understand by "ribbon":

and I guess you classified it as "the product used for making ribbon". What's the ready-made product you had in mind Ju?

Both of them are ribbons. You know which one it is from context.

Do you mean the correct name of typwriter tape is luddite?

ju

No. A Luddite is someone who's against technological progress. Barb was making a joke because typewriters are "ancient technology" by now.

Don't forget about the ribbons you display to reveal which diseases you are against!

Is it not that you wear them because you are against prejudice against the disease?

ps. There is also a ribbon to show that you are against prejudice against (i.e, you wish to show solidarity with) gay people. Homosexuality is not a disease.

Sorry, Dave -a little picky.
