Alphabet soup is made from pasta that is shaped like letters of the alphabet. His mom told him not to read at the table, but the soup he has to eat is made out of letters so he can't help but read.

Alphabet soup is usually a chicken broth containing small bits of semolina or egg noodles shaped like letters of the alphabet.
