Talking for a conventional mortgage/for conventional mortgages

Is the sentence "Subprime mortgages are granted to individuals who would not qualify for a conventional mortgage." correct? Or should it be "Subprime mortgages are granted to individuals who would not qualify for conventional mortgages."?
    Note that "individuals" is plural.
And what are the differences between them?
    Thanks very much!

I am not an English teacher but as a native English speaker, both sentences sound correct to me. If there is any difference in meaning, it is too subtle for me to discern.
