The text below is from our school's test, and I'm curious which is the right answer and especially the reason why the answer is so.

The question requires you to re-order the parts of the texts (A),(B) and (C) in correct order under the first paragragph.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

According to a psychologist, a business executive spends an hour of his day reading, two hours talking and eight hours listening.

(A) Therefore listening well is an exercise of attention and those who listen well tend to have good relationships with colleagues.

(B) Yet in school we spend a large amount of time teaching children how to read, a small amount of time teachingthem how to speak, and usually no time at all teaching them how to listen.

(C) I do not believe it would be a good thing to make what we teach in school exactly proportional to what we do after school, but I do think we would be wise to give our children some instruction in the process of listening.

Hello Phoebe

I would say the sentences should be placed in B, A, C order.

The reasoning lies in the first word of sentences B and A.

"Yet" is used to express results or outcome opposites to what
we would expect. In this case listening skills are not taught
in school even though they are important in business.

'Therefore' is used to explain the result or consequences of
a previous statement. In this case, if we aren't taught listening
skills we must teach ourselves by paying close attention.

C is the conclusion/opinion of the writer based on the preceding
discussion.

We're not supposed to do your homework for you, Phoebe.

It's in the rules.

I'd like to state that this is NOT my homework and that I know the answer to this question. However, I could not agree with and understand the answer. Therefore, I wanted to know from UsingEnglish.com how the answer worked as a second language learner. I hope there aren't any misunderstandings.

I'd say B,C,A, ending with the "Therefore" sentence.

EDIT -- I no longer believe this is true. A, B, C

Then you should post the answer in your original post and explain that you disagree with it or that you don't understand it. That would prevent misunderstandings and would make it clear what you're asking. :)

I agree with that. (In my humble opinion, no change is necessary.)

Yeah, I retract my "ending with the 'therefore'" statement. I re-read what A actually said and it doesn't make sense to end the entire thing with that. I now support ABC as well.

Phoebe:

Are you now satisfied that the answer you were originally given was correct and do you understand why it is correct?
