Hello.

I'm translating a comic sketch (By the way how do they call they? Anekdote? Joke? Or simply the one?) and would be grateful if you would correct my writing. Despite this, I would be happy if you find that story amusing as well. Here we are:

A lawbreaker claimed he made his car went that fast, so that a bee flying
around his head could have gone away and left about the back seats.

Respectfully,
Alex

I don't really understand it.

If it's just a short thing like that, it's a joke. The English word anecdote is a false friend to Russian анекдот.

I don't understand it either, Alex. Why was the bee to blame?

The guy increased the speed of the car in order to get rid of the bee; he thought if he speeded up the bee would be overtaken. The bee was flying in the car, apparently. So he broke a law in that he tried to escape from the bee. That is why the bee was to blame

Why anecdote is a false friend?

A short, interesting or amusing story about a real person or event
- amusing anecdotes about his brief career as an actor
- The book is a rich store of anecdote.

Or you might have been meaning that it's not used in the day-to-day speech?

I don't find the joke very amusing. If I hadn't read your comment that followed the OP, I wouldn't have understood the humor. And I thought the guy was charged with speeding rather than trying to escape from the bee :-? If you re-wrote the joke, perhaps that would make it a funny one.

PS. An anecdote is байка. Забавная/поучительная история из жизни реального человека.

That's why I'm asking you to help me to get on with that. Here you can read it in Russian, number 5: » MegaLife - , , , ..
Of course he was charged with the speeding! The humor is in that how he described this situation, himself :)

(1) Thank you for your very humorous joke. I guess that the

moral of the story is that people will tell all kinds of crazy

stories in order to escape responsibility for their behavior.

(2) A man told the judge that a bee had flown into his car, so

he was forced to break the speed limit, hoping that the insect

would feel the draft and fly out the window.

Respectfully yours,

James

Еще один нарушитель заявил, что разогнал автомобиль до высокой скорости, чтобы летавшая вокруг его головы пчела отстала и осталась в районе задних сидений.

One man caught speeding explained that he was speeding so that the bee, which was flying around his head, would fall behind and end up somewhere in the area of the back seat.

In Russian there's an interesting double meaning -- отстать can mean fall behind or leave alone.

Exactly. What Russians call анекдот, English speakers call joke.

Thank you, James. I'm glad you liked it!
You're absolutely right with 1!

However I imagine 2 in a slight different way. And let me draw some picture about it.
Fancy a car and another moving object, which in this case is a bee, that are moving with the same speed. The law of physics say that if you being a driver will speed up that the bee who is flying around you head will be overtaken so that it will be flying around at the back seats, of course, if the bee don't speed up too :-D So he tried to use the physics' law to get rid of a bee.

(1) When I was in high school in the 1950's, I almost failed physics.

(2) The teacher felt sorry for me and gave me a passing grade --

which I did not deserve.

Respectfully yours,

James

P.S. Here in the United States, the traditional grades (marks) are

A - B - C - D -Fail (no credit). These marks are still used in many

high schools and universities. Sometimes people refer to a

"Gentleman's C." That is, some kind-hearted instructors will give

a C for effort. A "D" is passing, but it is very humiliating. And someone

with many D's will not get into a good university.

It's not a big deal because you were the first one to get the joke!
