    perfect progressive vs simple

    Hello,

Sometimes I find it difficult to choose between the perfect progressive and the perfect simple when they refer to the past. I don't seem to see clearly if a completed action or action in progress is implied. I'd be grateful if somebody could take a look at my sentences and leave a comment.

He came home in the middle of the night because ...
1 .... he had been working late in the office.
    2. ... he had worked late in the office.
    3. ... he had been walking all the way from the office.
    4. ... he had walked all the way from the office.

Now that I've written them #2 and 4 sound wrong to me

    Thank you.

    Re: perfect progressive vs simple

Having taken a fresh look at the sentences, I begin to think they are all fine except for #3.
    Anyone please?
