Post What does the 'it' refer to?

-MacGyver never left home without it, considering it more useful than a gun. The CSI gang has used it to find evidence. And the guys from Discovery Channel's popular science show MythBusters have run it through numerous tests. They once concluded that there's almost nothing duct tape can't do.
Books have been written about it and websites and clubs have been formed to celebrate it. Even NASA has a policy that duct tape must travel on every space shuttle mission. What is it about this amazing tape that seems to make it one of life's necessities?

Hi teachers. Would you please tell me what the 'it' refers to?

    Thank you!

It doesn't refer to anything. The phrase means what qualities of this tape make it one of life's necessity.

PS No discussion of duct tape ("the handyman's secret weapon") is complete without the mention of the Canadian icon Red Green, the duct tape virtuoso.
