Everywhere she looked it seemed the turnfins were about, swooping and squawking—like the holograms she’d seen of crying gulls as they followed ocean-bound ships.

what is the meaning of "ocean-bound"?

Ships heading towards the ocean are ocean-bound.

NOT A TEACHER

(1) In English, if you put -bound after a noun, it means that something

is headed for that noun.

(a) For example, most secondary school graduates in the

United States are college-bound. (= they are going to college

after they graduate.)

(b) People who do not get a good education are failure-bound in

today's world. ( = they are not going to have a good life, for they

will not be able to get a good job. Of course, there are

always exceptions. Some people have rich or influential parents,

so their parents will take care of them. But ordinary people

really need to know something. Then they will be success-bound

people.)

Respectfully yours,
