What is the proper use of a period when using the middle initial of a proper name such as Joe D Public. Do you use a period on not?

    Some people do; others don't

    NOT A TEACHER

    (1) I have checked some of my books, and I believe it is correct to

say that most Americans still prefer to use a period:

    Joe D. Public

    (a) I most respectfully suggest that you follow this practice if

you are writing for American English readers.

    (i) For example, in some English-speaking countries, they do not

use a period after "mister." They write:

    Dear Mr Public,

To most Americans, this looks "strange." We are accustomed to:

    Dear Mr. Public,

    Respectfully yours,

    James
