    close-clipped mound

    Hi

The stone lay flat in the centre of a close-clipped mound
roughly the size of a double bed. The inscription had
weathered into illegibility, but the deeply carven cross
above it was still quite clear.

Does "close-clipped mound" mean that there was grass growing on this mound and it was clipped?

    Yes, cut short.
