    fish

I know that the plural form of fish is fish or fishes but fishes is rare. So we say there are a lot of fish in the pool. But can fishes refer to different kinds of fish? I mean like fruits and foods.

No, that's not a common usage. We'd normally talk about different types of fish, rather than different fishes.

    Neither do I.

Use fish as the plural every time, chrysanthemum; you will rarely be wrong.
