How would you describe 12:20:49 a.m.

    Hello, everyone.

This question came into my mind when I was reading one of yesterday's posts.

I guess people would rarely say at 12:20:49 a.m.. But if they have to say it, how would they say it out loud?

I vaguely recall I heard people say something like at twelve o'clock twenty minutes and fourty nine seconds. Is it correct? Are there other ways of saying it?

    Many thanks

    Richard

It's hard to say that time exactly, because, even as you say it, it is past. If we really had to, I suppose we'd go to a ten-second unit and say something like: It is twelve twenty and fifty seconds ...NOW"

As you say, unlikely to happen but I'd probably go with "twenty past midnight and 49 seconds"
