    wait at the red light

    The cars were waiting at the red light/at the traffic light.
    The cars were waiting for the red light to change.

    Do both sentences sound as naturally to native speakers? Or is the second better?

    Personally, I wouldn't bother with the 'red'. People 'are waiting for the lights [note the plural - maybe just in Br E ] to change'. If you're waiting for a green light to change, you'll soon be woken up

    But 'waiting for the red light to change' is perfectly OK.
