hi out there,
Do we say 1-"Mary is as taller as he or him??
2-"John is taller than he or him"?
NOT A TEACHER
(1) The teacher and the moderator have both given us excellent
advice.
(2) This non-teacher humbly suggests that you -- as a learner
who wishes to speak "perfect grammar book English" -- follow the
"rules":
Mary is as tall as
he. (= as he is tall.)
John is taller than
he. (= than he is tall.)
You may also say as/than
he is.
(3) As the moderator told you, there are many viewpoints. I
am guessing that people who write university-level articles
follow the traditional "rules." This non-teacher suggests that
you do, too -- at least, in elegant writing. If you do so,
many people will greatly respect your understanding of traditional
"rules." In fact, some
educated native speakers might say of you:
Wow! Eddy understands English grammar better than
I.
(= I do)
Respectfully yours,
James
P.S. Don't worry about being called a "snob." In this life, it is
impossible to satisfy
everyone. Be courteous and respectful to
those who disagree with you, and then continue to speak what
you feel is correct English.
