put accurate time in a navigator's pocket.?

Is "put accurate time in a navigator's pocket." a figurative meaning? As you can't actually put time in a pocket.

ex)...In 1761, Englishman John Harrison perfected a clock that worked at sea and put accurate time in a navigator's pocket.

The clock allowed the sailor to know what time it is, accurately. In that sense he did have "time" in his pocket.

It is common to ask what time it is by asking someone "Pardon me, do you have the time?"

Also, it is impossible to fix longitude without an accurate chronometer. A good watch would do this, and the metonymy is a good one.
