In my opinion you are right. There is anothor similar instance in the same text: "My first instinct is to get out of there as soon as I can because I didn’t know what to expect.”

It is correct to use the past tense, but we can use the present tense in narratives to make things seem more vivid and closer to the listener.

Yes.
The person is implicitly asking the interviewer to put himself in the interviewee's position.
"You see him every day. You're best mates. You don't expect this sort of thing to happen." Naturally, the speaker is talking about himself, but it's common to use this rhetorical device.
