    Lower - demean

    - Don't lower yourself too much/Don't demean yourself too much, or else people will look down on you/will disregard you.

Can I use this sentence in daily conversations?

    Thank you so much

    Re: Lower - demean

It would be understood, but 'lower' sounds wrong to me. I think the person doing the lowering and the thing lowered are usually distinct - like a person going to a well and lowering the bucket, or a sailor lowering the mainsail.

Do you mean 'adopt a lower position' or 'put yourself down'?

    Re: Lower - demean

Afterthought: perhaps my feeling about 'lower' in this sense is just that it's transitive. You can have 'He lowered himself down on the other side of the wall' - although perhaps 'He let himself down...' would be a bit commoner in that context. In any case, 'lowered himself' is quite acceptable...

    Re: Lower - demean

And you can lower yourself in other people's eyes, meaning that they lower their opinion of you.
