at least not for lack of a ...

    Hi

A head of a school is talking to a lady who beats her granddaughter. The headmaster says:

Mrs Rigby, Ethel had cause to remove her dress in
school this afternoon and Miss Mayfield saw, to her
consternation, that her back shows marks of a beating. A
    pretty severe beating.’

‘Be a funny thing if it didn’t,’ Mrs Rigby said with no
sign of being, abashed or repentant. ‘Laid it on good and
hard, I did. She ’ll bear the marks for a week, I reckon.’
‘May we know why you beat her?’ - asked the headmaster
‘Youmay. You’ll understand, sir. I’mnot having her go
the way Maud went, at least not for lack of a hiding to
    bring her. to her senses.’

--- I'm not sure what she's trying to say in that last sentence?

So that last sentence says: I don't want Ethel to become like Maud and that's why I'm beating her just to bring her to her senses.

Yes, with the additional thought, "So it won't be my responsibility if she does become like Maud, because I will have beaten her to prevent this".

The thought did cross my mind that Ethel attended a rather strange school - Ethel had cause to remove her dress in school this afternoon.

Few female pupils had cause to remove their dresses when I taught.
