And "be guilty of" means "be afraid of" here?

Context:

But there is something that I must say to my people who stand on the warm threshold which leads into the palace of justice. In the process of gaining our rightful place we must not be guilty of wrongful deeds. Let us not seek to satisfy our thirst for freedom by drinking from the cup of bitterness and hatred.

If you are guilty of something, you have commited an illegal deed, or at least done something that you should not have done.

'Wrongful deeds' are illegal or immoral acts.

So we must be guilty of wrongful deeds in making progress! That is why I don't understand that context.

If one doesn't feel ashamed for doing something wrong/illegal, how can he/she move ahead?

I believe there is a grammatical rule here that I don't understand.

Please be more patient. It is not fair on other people who have questions to bump your post after only four hours.
