Hi everybody,
I'm translating Dickens' Great Expectations (first two pages), but I don't get the meaning of a couple of sentences said by the old man Pip meets at the churchyard - Pip is a young orphan boy and the old man is fearful, with a great iron on his leg, no hat, broken shoes, soaked in water, smothered in mud etc. I know there's already a translation and it would be easier to check it, but for honesty I cannot look at it.
1. "You young dog," said the man, licking his lips, "what fat cheeks you ha' got." [...] "Darn me if I couldn't eat em," said the man, "and if I han't half a mind to't."
What does it mean?
A. If he could, he would eat half Pip's brain as well
B. If he could, he wouldn't think of it twice.
C. If he couldn't, he would replace them with half brain.
D. Other??
2. "Now lookee here!" said the man. "Where's your mother?"
What does it mean?
A. Now look here.
B. Now tell me.
C. Now listen to me.
D. Other??
3. After darkly looking at his leg and me several times, he came closer to my tombstone (Pip is sitting on it), took me by both arms, and tilted me back as far as he could hold me; so that his eyes looked most powerfully down into mine, and mine looked most helplessly into his.
What does it mean?
A. The man took Pip's arms and pulled them down
B. The man picked Pip up and got his head closer
C. Other??
