    putting on some soothing sounds?

Is it "turning on radio or mp3 player to listen to music" or "wearing headset to listen to music"?

ex)After a stressful day, how do you clear your mind? Relaxing in a comfortable chair, putting on some soothing sounds, and reading something light entertaining are all good methods to get ready for some restful sleep....

It could be. It might also be switching on the wireless or putting a few LPs on the turntable. But I think you have the idea.

You mean it could be both? I have no idea, which do they usually mean by that?

No, it could mean any of these things. There are a lot of ways you can "put some music on", which is what it would generally mean. It has nothing to do with wearing anything, like headphones.
You "put on some soothing sounds" simply by switching on any source of soothing music (usually - though other sounds can't be excluded. Maybe you find bird noises or the sound of waves soothing).

It excludes playing the music yourself, say on a piano; and it would generally exclude asking your wife how her day went.
