    Reading comprehension help

Hey, I am currently doing some reading comprehension questions, and I can sure use some 2nd opinions.

    passage 1:

Notably, diagnostic criteria are intended to assist clinicians, and are not intended to be representative of what an individual sufferer feels or experiences in living with illness.

Diagnostic criteria may in fact be meant to describe an individual patient's pain or condition.

So, is the 1st sentence analyzing the 2nd sentence, or giving examples for 2nd? I think it is the analyzing; there is no example shown here ( or from what my poor reading skill tells me )

    passage 2:

In September 1862, Lincoln's Emancipation Proclamation made the freeing of slaves a war goal, despite opposition from northern Copperheads who tolerated secession and slavery.

Emancipation ensured that Britain and France would not intervene to help Confederacy.

Is the 2nd sentence stating an effect for the 1st, or describing a process? I think it is stating an effect, because it is telling what the emancipation is doing.

    passage 3:

The very existence of love itself subject to debate.

Some categorically reject the noun as false or meaningless.

for this one, I think they are contradicting one another.

    what do you guys think?

I think the second sentence is simply adding information for clarification.

2: On September 1862, Lincoln's Emancipation Proclamation made the freeing of slaves a war goal, despite opposition from northern Copperheads who tolerated secession and slavery.

Emancipation ensured that Britain and France would not intervene to help Confederacy.

The second sentence explains either the cause or the result, or both, of the proclamation.

3: The very existence of love itself subject to debate.

Some categorically reject the noun as false or meaningless.

for this one, I think they are contradicting one another. No. The writer is giving one side of the debate. S/he might go on to give the other side, for example: Others consider it to be a very real thing.
