When a third party is mentioned in the body of a business letter, are you supposed to CC that person?
I am writing to someone and a third person is involved in the substance of whatever I am writing about. Either they are the subject of the letter, they will be involved in follow-up or they are referenced as the source of information, should not this person get a copy of the letter mentioning him/her?
But not if they are the subject of the letter?
It all depends, doesn't it? If the letter is between me and my boss about the status of one of my underlings, then the underling does not necessarily need to be informed.
Or, if I am talking about our company's choices among two different vendors and the pros and cons of each one, it is not necessary or wise to include the vendors in on the letter.
