    take the long way around

    Dear all,

What is the meaning of the expression "We take the old way around" in the following context:

A (guy): You shouldn't be alone. If you want, I could fly over for a few days. Friends.
B (girl): I appreciate that, but I think I'll be okay. I guess we took the long way around to being friends, huh?

    "A" an "B" are coworkers.

    Thanks a lot.

Their friendship did not come about easily. They almost certainly had dificulties, misunderstandings and, possibly. times of intensely disliking each other, before they became friends.
