    worth fourpence ...

    Hi

A woman was looking for something among the things belonging to other woman. She found among others:

... a coupon worth fourpence if you bought a certain detergent.

Does it mean that if you bought a certain detergent in a shop you would get a coupon worth fourpence?

No. If you handed over the coupon in the shop, the price would be reduced by fourpence.

In the old pre-1971 currency, 4d (fourpence) was often written as one word, and pronounced /ˈfɔ:pəns/. Nowadays we write 4p as two words, and pronounce it as /fɔ: pens/ or /fɔ: pi:/

So if you bought a certain detergent in a shop you would get a coupon and the price of the detergent would be 4p less.

No. You have the coupon before you go into the shop. It may come free with a magazine, or be delivered with the junk mail.

Some items in a shop fo come with a coupon for money off your next purchase.

I see now. You get a coupon. Go the the given shop, buy the given detergent and thanks to the coupon get a 4p reduction.

You don't necessarily have to go to a specific shop. If the voucher (coupon) refers to a specific product, you should be able to use it in any shop which sells that product.
