get to the back of something

    Dear teachers,

Would you be kind tell me your opinion concerning my choice of the interpretation of the expression in bold in the following sentences?

I should like to get to the back of Government’s policy in this matter.

Basil. …. I must get to the bottom of this business. (I. Murdock, “The Servants and the Snow”)

get to the back of something = get to the bottom of something = make out something = make sense of something

    V.

Re: get to the back of something

'I must get to the bottom of this business' means 'I must make sense of it/figure everything out/get to the heart of the matter'.

I have never heard 'get to the back of' in this context.
