Is the tense of my verbs correct?

When I was a kid, I got often poor grades at school because I wasted my time playing with my friends. One day my mother told me, I should study better to get a degree, otherwise when I got married I had to ask my husband for money whenever I want to buy something.

Thank you for spending your time correcting my sentence.

    ***** NOT A TEACHER *****

    Hello, Arzgol:

    (1) A teacher will soon answer you.

    (2) I think that you wrote a nice paragraph.

    (3) This is how I (a non-teacher) would say it:

When I was a poor kid, I often got poor grades in school

because I wasted my time playing with my friends. One day

my mother told me that I should study harder if I wanted to

earn a degree; otherwise, when I got married I would have to

ask my husband whenever I wanted to buy something.

    Sincerely,

    James

When I was a child, I often got poor grades at school because I wasted my time plaing with my friends. One day my mother told me that I should study harder so that I would get a degree, otherwise once married I would have to ask my husband for money whenever I wanted to buy something.

TheParser (a non-teacher) made the changes I (a retired teacher) would have made, except for a couple of minor points.

When I was a (poor *) kid, I often got poor grades in school because I wasted my time playing with my friends. One day my mother told me that I should study harder (if I wanted**) to earn a degree; otherwise, when I got married I would have to ask my husband whenever I wanted to buy something.

    * The word 'poor' was not in the original and is, in my opinion, not necessary.
** I think that TheParser's version is better, but these words are not essential.
