Gabriel (angel) had played his trump; and those of us who could not follow suit were arraigned for examination.

I guess that this sentence has something of gambling terminology. But what does 'arranged for examination' mean? They comitted crimes and now must go to God's court of justice where He would ask them questions about their lives?

    Re: Gabriel

    That's how I'd interpret it.

NB- 'arraigned' not 'arranged- call someone to court
