    Post confusing tense!

    Dear teachers,

When I'm trying to describe what happened in a story I read to my friend, should I use simple present or the past tense?

For example, one character in the story is a magacian. I'm not going to tell the story, but simply tell my friend what kind of person the magacian is(or should I use 'was'?) or what he did(does?) in the story, should I say
-he uses a lot of magic to help poor people
    or
-he used a lot of magic to help poor people?

    Thank you!

If you are telling someone about a story, you have a choice. You can use present tenses or past tenses. As long as you are consistent it is fine.

This book is about a hobbit who goes to find a dragon. On the way, he finds a ring. When he puts it on his finger, he becomes invisible.
