    board the station

What does "the station" in the following refer to?

    1. The Brent Spar had been used as a loading buoy and storage tank for crude oil for 15 years until it was decommissioned in 1991. Greenpeace activists boarded the station to buy some time while calling for mass demonstrations and a market boycott.

Does it refer to "the Brent Spar"?

    2. Zero emissions, for instance, depends on the efficient use of by-products from one part of the production cycle to be used as inputs for another part of the cycle. Once the loop is complete, byproducts and waste are converted to resources and products. At every point that an operation in the company does not close the loop, it is losing money.

What does the above in bold mean in the context?

    Thank you.

    Re: board the station

    1. I guess so, unless there is some better antecedent earlier in the text.

    2. Turning "waste" products form one process into inputs to another process. The point being that anything you throw away is lost money. This is not true, as waste disposal may be less costly than any recycling of waste into useful products.
