Which is correct in your opinion?

Helpless babies cry to.....................their parents that they are ill, hungry, uncomfortable.

    1 A communicate B persuade C inform D demonstrate

The idea that having a good cry can do you...............is a very old one.

    2 A better B fine C good D well

I think the correct answer are 1 C and 2 B. What do you think about it?

I'd agree with 1 C. Though, it's hard to say that crying babies aren't persuasive.
2 C. "A good cry can do you good."

My English teacher has corrected me by saying that in the first sentence the only verb that fits well is "persuade". According to her, a baby cannot inform his/her parents. Since I'm not quite sure of this, I have posted this sentence, just to have a someone else's opinion...

The whole premise is wrong. We don't know that the baby is attempting to communicate with its parents at all. If it's hungry, ill, etc. it will cry. What it hopes to gain from crying and by what agency, we can only guess at.
I chose "inform" because this was the least specific word, and I wanted to attribute the least cognitive function to the baby as I could.
To say that a baby can't "inform" his parents, but that he can "persuade" his parents is a bit of a stretch.

    A
is not possible without a following 'to'.

Your teacher is wrong about 'inform', which is the correct answer (in my opinion).

We often use 'inform' in this way. "Dogs bark to inform us that someone is coming". We have no idea what is going on in the dogs's mind - we use 'inform' to give our interpretation.

It is probably genetically built into babies that they emit cries when they are hungry, distressed, ill, etc. If they didn't, they'd soon die, and the human race would soon die out. The shorthand way of describing this is that they inform their mothers of their needs.

Now, 'persuading' is different. As Raymott said, babies can be persuasive; however that is only in the sense of our being persuaded. Genetically programmed behaviour may be said to inform, but not really to persuade.
ps I wrote that while Raymott was writing his rather more succinct post.

Re: Which is correct in your opinion?

I would agree that "inform" is the only logical answer (although I also agree that there is no actual intent on the part of the baby).

Persuasion requires (normally) the use of reasoned argument in order to convince another person of your point of view or to do what you want, especially when that person originally wanted to do nothing at all or to do something different. I don't think we can say that a baby is capable of reasoned argument - it has neither the language skills nor the cognitive ability to do that.
