    out of whack

    Dear teachers,

Would you be kind enough to give me your considered opinion concerning my interpretation of the expression in bold in the following sentence?

Annixter…complained of terrific colics all the preceding night. His stomach was out of whack. (Fr. Norris, “The Octopus”)

out of whack = out of order, damaged

Yes, in this case it does mean "not working/functioning properly". It can also mean "not straight", "off balance" or "out of line/alignment":
There are four poles in row but one of them is slightly out of whack with the others.
