    Female subservience script

    Dear Sir/Madam,

I would like to know what the "female subservience script" means in the following sentence. Thanks a lot.

"My parents never gave me the female subservience script that my friends received. So I just did what all my male friends did."

    Re: Meaning of a phrase

Her parents did not take the one-time traditional parental role of teaching her that females were less important than males.

The idea that females should be subservient to men was widely held in the UK until well into the 1970s, and is still held by some today. It is still prevalent in some cultures around the world.

    Re: Meaning of a phrase

'Female subservience' means a woman doing as she is told by a man or other women instead of making her own decisions.

We usually use the word 'script' in connection with a theater play or a movie to talk about the words that the actors speak when they perform
    their role.

A script is usually written by someone other than the actor (a script writer
or a playright) therefore the actor is speaking someone else words as if
they were his or her own.

If you give someone a script it means you are giving them instructions on
how you expect them to act or think about a certain subject. In this case about female subservience.

Assuming the friends in your example sentence believed what the script said was true, their opinons regarding fermale subservience would be the same as their parents and not necessarily their own.

If you aren't given a script your opinions are your own, not those of your parents, therfore you might think differently than your friends.

    Re: Meaning of a phrase

Deepurple, Instead of Meaning of a phrase, a better thread title would have been the phrase itself: Female subservience script.

This is helpful if we need to refer back to it at some time in the future.
