    Complex Sentences

Is the following sentence a complex sentence or a compound sentence?

My brother was fired today because of his inept performance, but I received a promotion.
I think it is compound, but I'm not sure if "because of his inept performance" is a dependent clause which would make it a compound/complex sentence.
    Thank you.

    "because of his inept performance"
The above is not a clause because there is no verb in it. It is an adverbial phrase modifying the verb "was fired".
It is a compound sentence joined by the conjunction "but". (My brother was fired today..... but I received a promotion.)
