    go that far

    Dear all,

What is the meaning by the expression "I wouldn't go that far" in:

A: A I know the boy in this picture.
Detective: A friend of your sister?
A: I wouldn't go that far. We met him the first week in the neighborhood (chuckles) He messed with the wrong new girl.

They were investigating the death of A's older sister. It's a cold case.

    Thanks a lot.

    A: bla bla bla
    Detective: bla bla bla
    A: I wouldn't "assume"

No, not "assume." It means that I would not make that statement. I would not go to that extreme.

In this case, he is not saying it is a "friend" of his sister. Maybe it's an acquaintance or a classmate or co-worker.

I agree with SoothingDave; the person is suggesting that friend is too strong a term.
